Diagnostic Imaging Technology

This program trains technologists to perform radiological examinations of all anatomical systems of the human body, for all age groups. You will learn the basic techniques of angioradiology, ultrasound, computerized axial tomography (CAT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) investigation.

About the program

Program objectives
This program trains individuals to take on the responsibility of performing the duties inherent to the profession of diagnostic imaging technologist.

Upon completion of the program, diagnostic imaging technologists are capable (after analyzing a given situation) of making appropriate decisions, taking required action, being accountable for the consequences of these actions, communicating effectively with other specialists and demonstrating empathy and respect towards patients.

From the moment they enter the job market, graduates of this program autonomously perform all tasks related to radiological examinations of the body’s anatomical systems in a professional manner and for patients of all ages. They are also capable of applying basic skills and techniques related to angiography, ultrasound, CT scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) testing.

Diagnostic imaging technologists practise their profession exclusively in hospital settings or in private clinics and CLSCs offering radiology services. They work as part of professional multidisciplinary teams composed of physicians and paramedical personnel. The conditions under which they work vary depending on the situation. They may work alone or as part of a team during the day, the evening, at night or on weekends. As far as work environment is concerned, they might work in a radiology department, at patients’ bedsides, in the emergency room or in operating rooms.

Diagnostic imaging technologists must have the skills and behaviours required to work in a hospital setting. As such, they must be able to: carry out all technical tasks with the utmost precision, communicate effectively with colleagues, respect occupational health and safety regulations, make judicious use of radiation and be self-reliant, conscientious, and good team players. In addition to these specific characteristics, they must also be able to handle the stress associated with the profession and always be concerned with putting patients first.

In order to be certified to carry out this profession, graduates must meet the criteria established by the Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec.
