About the program
Program objectives
This program trains individuals to become photographers.
As part of their activities, photographers fulfill mandates from communications or graphic design agencies, the media, various industries, retail businesses, institutions and individuals. They can also work on personal and artistic photography projects and are often self-employed or freelance workers.
Photographers take photographs in various environments and using cameras of all types. Working alone or as part of a team, they take photographs in natural or studio light, either in studio or outdoors.
They take portraits and photographs of social events as well as commercial, industrial, advertising, documentary, art and author photographs. Photographers generally evaluate the needs of their clients and prepare for photo shoots by arranging the decor and installing lighting accessories. They then select and fine-tune photographs and deliver the final product to their clients. Part of their work often involves managing their photo archives and promoting their business. Photographers work with lighting equipment and lighting measurement instruments as well as image processing software. New technologies are an integral part of the work they do, with digital photography now being the norm.
