Nuclear Medicine Technology

This program trains technologists to perform in vivo nuclear medicine examinations. You will develop skills related to work organization, preparation and quality control of radiopharmaceuticals and equipment, as well as material and inventory management.

About the program

Program objectives
This program trains individuals to be capable of performing the tasks required in their work as nuclear medicine technologists. In other words, to be capable of mastering work practices, making enlightened decisions, establishing harmonious and beneficial communication with patients and colleagues, evolving in their field of activity and conscientiously fulfilling their professional duties.

These skills are mainly put to use when technologists are called upon to carry out in vivo nuclear medicine examinations. In other words, with patients in hospitals within the health and social services network. Various aspects of these skills are also necessary when performing other tasks: work organization, preparing and ensuring quality control of radiopharmaceutical products and equipment, conducting inventory and materials management, developing examination techniques as well as training interns and hospital staff.

By mastering various aspects of the profession, some technologists can orient their careers towards sales, customer service or the development of new products, working for manufacturers of equipment and devices used in the field of nuclear medicine.

This program provides graduates with the criteria required of the Ordre des technologues en imagerie médicale, en radio-oncologie et en électrophysiologie médicale du Québec, which governs the practice of the profession. It also prepares them to meet the needs of hospitals located in intermediate and remote areas where the lack of resources leads to an increase in workload and responsibilities, thereby requiring more professional autonomy. Nuclear medicine technologists perform their duties based on written prescriptions and under the supervision of physicians.

This program enables students to progressively acquire consistent knowledge based on the initial mastery of scientific and technological foundations. This knowledge must then be applied to examination techniques through such methods as internships in clinical settings. These internships put students in early contact with their potential work environments and give them the opportunity to perfect the skills they need to perform increasingly complex nuclear medicine examinations.
