About the program
Program objectives
This unique program of study trains individuals to become technicans specialized in the development and rational use of natural resources, most notably with relation to hunting and fishing. These technicians act as intermediaries between the general public and existing wildlife and fishing resources. This particular role requires them to perform duties related to the dissemination of information, exploitation and conservation of wildlife and natural resources.
The program includes courses in biology, administration, outdoor recreation and the management of equipment. Throughout the course of the program, students take part in practical activities in the region’s wildlife areas as well as on its lakes and rivers and at the Centre d’études et de recherche Manicouagan. These practical activities foster the development of the skills and knowledge students will need in their future careers.
It is worth mentioning that new technologies such as computers and data loggers, are also used as part of the program.
Career opportunities
As the students in this program originate from around the province, they often work in various regions throughout Quebec once they have graduated. They can work for the Government of Quebec (for the recreation, hunting and fishing department; the environment department; or the agriculture, fisheries and food department) or for the Government of Canada (Parks Canada; Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada; Fisheries and Oceans Canada), ZECs, outfitters, outdoor recreation areas, regional tourism associations and other recreational businesses.
Graduates can work as wildlife development and conservation technicians, environment technicians, nature interpreters, project managers, research and impact study technicians as well as cynegetic and halieutic development technicians. Average salary has increased.
