Navigation

This program trains people to ensure marine navigation, ship loading/unloading and the safety of the ship, the people on board and the cargo. This course adequately prepares you to pass the Transport Canada exams so that you can obtain the Watchkeeping Mate certificate required by the profession.

About the program

Program objectives
The Canadian Government requires that navigation officers hold a certificate delivered by Transport Canada in order to practise their profession in the Canadian Merchant Navy. Graduates from the Navigation program are prepared to take the Transport Canada exams in order to obtain a Watchkeeping Mate Certificate of Competency.

Graduates are capable of handling maritime navigation, loading and unloading ships, and ensuring the safety of the vessel, the individuals on board and the vessel’s cargo.

The program provides students with the training they need to reach the various stages of certification with Transport Canada:

Watchkeeping Mate Certificate of Competency: on-board safety or voyage planning
First Mate: transshipment
Master Mariner: nautical and commercial management of the vessel
Graduates must have the required sea time and hold all prerequisite certificates before taking the exam leading to their Master Mariner certification—the highest rank in the merchant navy. This may take 4 to 5 years to achieve, given the fact that one rarely sails for more than 6 or 9 months a year.

Market requirements
Jobs in this sector require the ability to travel anywhere in the world with just a few hours’ notice, and stay at this location for several months. Knowledge of English is essential and a third language is an asset (Spanish, Greek, Filipino).

Other characteristics of the program
The internships that are part of the marine navigation and mechanical engineering programs are an essential complement to the knowledge acquired in the theoretical courses. They take place offshore on various types of vessels alternately with study sessions during the academic year and continually throughout the summer, for a total of 12 months of study and/or internships. Students are not paid during their offshore internships. However, they are eligible for loans and bursaries. Except in rare cases (aboard ferries and seasonal cruise ships) officer cadets will receive room and board. Certain maritime companies pay internship stipends, but this is not an obligation.
